Eclectic therapy. What is that?
Eclectic therapy is active and directive when it comes to promoting positive behavioural treatments. Therefore, by attentively listening and through encouragement the patient will gain a better understanding of the situation and will manage alternatives by boosting their self-esteem in order to reach resilience and achieve a sense of hope.
The patient will have a different perspective on how to move forward, make decisions, progress and how to develop, strengthening their adaptive skills.
The expression of feelings and thoughts concerning issues and everyday life are an important part of the therapeutic process as is the trusting relationship between patient and the therapist.
What is the average length of therapy and how many sessions do I need?
It can last from few sessions to several months or years, on a weekly basis. Sometimes it can last decades. It all depends on the needs, on the therapeutic work and on the patients commitment, evolution and expectations.
Once the therapy ends, the patient and the therapist can agree on doing a few follow-up sessions on an ad-hoc basis in order to evaluate the patient’s evolution concerning the problem(s) brought to light through the therapy.
As a clinical psychologist and sexologist I use this approach and techniques to reinforce the patient’s ability to cope with several situations. Here are some examples that might help you to understand its range:
• Acute changes, such as the loss of a loved one or a job or even a severe disappointment;
• Chronic situations such as illness and depressive episodes, low self-esteem, general stress and anxiety, conflicts and volatile but yet unavoidable everyday life or decisive situations;
